564. Two Funerary Earthenware Figures (China, Ming Dynasty)

Lot includes two male earthenware standing figures hand painted with pigments. Both figurines wear a tall black cap, green robes. One holds a wheel, across his chest, under his left arm. Measures apprx 16"H. The second figure carries a tri-lobed object (possibly a hat) in his right hand. Measures apprx 15-1/2"H. Both figures are hollow and stand on a raised hexagonal base. Figures such as these often were buried with the deceased to serve and provide comfort items for the after world. The number, quality and size of these figures were an indication of status.
