114. A Pair of Engravings by Maria Catherine Prestel (English, 1744-1794) "The Country Girl in London" and "The Country Girl at Home", both after original paintings by George Morland. Both published ca. 1792, London. Prestel worked with great success in London from 1786 until her death in 1794. Her plates, which are usually etched, show traces of aquatint and few are engraved entirely in this manner. Both pieces have tag from Vixseboxse Art Galleries, Cleveland, OH. 116. Francisco Goya y Lucientes (Spanish, 1746-1828) "Los Caprichos: La filiacion" (the relationship) Plate 57. No visible watermark, cream colored wove paper. The eighty etchings of "Los Caprichos" were the first collection Goya produced for sale as a single set. In 1803, fearful of the Spanish Inquisition, Goya relinquished the plates to Charles IV, in return for a pension for his son. The plates remain with the Calcografia, issued in the ensuing years by that institution. Apprx 8-5/8" x 5-7/8" plate mark. Overall measures apprx 11-7/8" x 9-3/8". 100/200 Sold: $304.75 |
